Tomball, TX: Lone Star College-Tomball is pleased to announce one if its faculty has been honored with the Texas Veterinary Medical Association’s (TVMA) Licensed Veterinary Technician of the Year Award.  David Sessum, LVT, received the award at the TVMA Annual Conference & Expo. The award is given to the licensed veterinary technician who has displayed outstanding professional performance as a technician.  Nominations are made by TVMA members and the winner is selected by the TVMA Awards Committee.

“I am absolutely humbled to win this award,” said Sessum, who is a graduate of the veterinary technology program at Lone Star College-Tomball and has been a faculty member since 2017.

“I feel that as a graduate from LSC-Tomball, I was properly prepared for success after graduation.  My career has allowed me many opportunities and my involvement in the Texas Veterinary Medical Association has guided my path back to education.”

Before returning to work at Lone Star College where he was recognized with its Outstanding Alumni Award in 2011, Mr. Sessum worked at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine as a veterinary technician in the rehabilitation service. He later worked at Blinn College where he helped establish its veterinary technology program. In addition to his teaching experience, Mr. Sessum has provided a voice for veterinary technicians in Texas, from the push to achieving licensure for veterinary technicians to serving on the TVMA Board of Directors as the Licensed Veterinary Technician representative.

While a student, Sessum says, he didn’t realize the value of the LSC-Tomball program, but after graduation, “I quickly realized the quality of my education as opportunities were presented to me because of where I obtained my education.”

“This is the second time David has been recognized with the top Vet Tech award,” said Joyce Brod, LVT, director of the Veterinary Technology at LSC-Tomball and last year’s recipient of the TVMA Technician of the Year Award. She added, “It’s also exciting that this is the first time that two faculty from the same college have been awarded in successive years.”

LSC-Tomball offers a two-year veterinary technology associate of applied science degree that is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.  It provides students the classroom education, skills and experience needed for a career in a veterinary hospital, a zoological garden, a medical research laboratory, a governmental regulatory program or the Veterinary Medical Corp.

Sessum feels honored to be a graduate of this program and happy to be part of a vet-tech program that’s helping even more students succeed after graduation.

“The veterinary profession is a very noble profession and I’ve had great mentors and colleagues that have provided a great example of leadership for me to follow and I look forward to many more years in this profession as a Licensed Veterinary Technician.”

Each year, the members of the Texas Veterinary Medical Association gather at the Annual Conference & Expo to participate in veterinary continuing education and to recognize those in the veterinary field who have excelled throughout the year. These awards, for categories such as Distinguished Career Achievement and Equine Practitioner of the Year, recognize and encourage outstanding practice and exemplary service in the field of veterinary medicine.  Founded in 1903, the Texas Veterinary Medical Association is a professional association composed of more than 3,700 veterinarians committed to protecting public health, promoting high educational, ethical and moral standards within the veterinary profession and educating the public about animal health and its relationship to human health.
