LSC-CyFair Celebrates International Education Week in November

In celebration of International Education Week Nov. 14 - Nov. 18, Lone Star College-CyFair will host a variety of cultural presentations as well as a book and film guides library display.

“International Education Week is a wonderful opportunity to highlight and celebrate just some of the things that LSC-CyFair does in support of our international student population, internationalizing our curriculum, and giving students opportunities to engage in study abroad, virtual exchange, and cross-cultural relationship building,” said Laura Taggett, International Faculty Fellow and faculty member.

In addition to panels, presentations, and workshops for students, faculty and the community, the LSC-CyFair Library’s physical and digital collections will highlight fiction and nonfiction books that focus on the immigrant experience in America, as well as a film guide, all meant to highlight international books and films that explore and reflect the diverse cultures in the LSC-CyFair community.

While there will be events earmarked for students and faculty only throughout the week, several events are open to community members.

Community events kick off Nov. 14 with the “Glimpses of the Modern Middle East” presentation. All are welcome to join LSC-CyFair faculty as they introduce some of the history, culture and politics of one of the world’s important and fascinating regions. This presentation will be held from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in person in the Center for Academic and Student Affairs (CASA) Room 110 or virtually.

For those interested in how a binational team of LSC students, along with students in Jordan and Iraq, is working to solve global issues in their communities, attend the IREX Global Solutions Sustainability Challenge from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 16 virtually.

Also Nov. 16, in a sequel to a spring panel “Invasion of Ukraine Follow-up: What Now, What Next?”, government and history faculty follow up on understanding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. in CASA Room 110 or virtually.

Community events conclude Nov. 17 with the Books Without Borders Book Club discussion of “The Fountain of Silence” by Ruta Sepetys, a #1 New York Times bestselling author. Join Librarian Liz Nebeker, who will facilitate this story of a gripping, extraordinary portrait of love, silence, and secrets under a Spanish dictatorship, at 1 p.m. in the library (LRNC) Room131 or email Elizabeth.D.Nebeker@LoneStar.edu for Webex details.
