LSC-Tomball Pharmacy Technology Streamlines Admissions Process

TOMBALL, TX:  The Lone Star College-Tomball Pharmacy Technology Program continues to evolve to meet the needs of their students by providing opportunities for increased financial aid eligibility and by decreasing the certificate program’s pre-admission requirements.

“After listening to our students, and thoughtful consideration, we have strategically reorganized the course structure of our program,” said Angela Bayer, M.Ed., LSC-Tomball’s Pharmacy Technology Program director. “This change gives our students the opportunity to receive financial aid sooner, which lifts a huge burden from their shoulders.”

The pre and post admission course requirements have been restructured to allow for a smoother entrance into the program. With the upcoming changes, the Pharmacy Technology department will accept program applications up to one-week prior to the start of classes in August and January, and students will only need to have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

“Fewer admission requirements allow more students to enter the program more quickly, with fewer barriers and missed opportunities,” said Bayer. “The primary purpose of these changes is to help students achieve their career goals sooner and continue to supply the Houston healthcare industry the brightest and best prepared pharmacy technicians.”

Started in 2005, the popular three semester program allows students flexible class schedules through course modality options, in person, hybrid and online. In person classes are held at the LSC- Tomball Health Science Building, which has multiple state of the art simulation labs, allowing program content to be reinforced through mirror realistic healthcare settings. Before graduating with their Pharmacy Technology Certificate, students complete 288 externship hours, which includes practice in both retail and hospital pharmacy clinical sites.

“We've hired several of their students ourselves and have no problem referring any of their students because the Pharmacy Tech Program at LSC-Tomball is exemplary,” said Kim Tran, Charge Pharmacist, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center. “The student's knowledge and skills are outstanding, which makes transitioning from classroom to hands-on training much easier.”

The LSC-Tomball Pharmacy Technology Program team is hosting information sessions on Monday, October 24, 11 a.m. and Wednesday November 9, 2:30 p.m., at the LSC-Tomball Health Science Building located at 700 Graham Drive in Tomball.
