Art Exhibit at LSC-Montgomery Gives Common Materials a New Perspective

Lone Star College-Montgomery’s Art Department welcomes conceptual artist Jeremy Newton and his exhibit A.I. Altered Identity, on display April 8-26 in the Mary Matteson-Parrish Art Gallery, located in the Performing Arts Center (Building D).

The community is invited to the artist’s reception on Thursday, April 25, at noon, in the same location. The reception is free and refreshments will be served.

Healing
One of Artist Jeremy Newton’s pieces, “Healing,” configures staples that have been removed from a utility pole back together to create the form of the pole. See this piece, along with many others, in Newton’s exhibit A.I. Altered Identity, on display at Lone Star College-Montgomery April 8-26.

This exhibit will offer the viewer an element of surprise, as common materials, such as eraser shavings or staples, are seen in a new context of lines, shapes, forms, or images.

“What I want the viewer to think about is the meaning of materials and the relationship of the material to the shape or form,” said Newton.

The main feature of the show is a giant Staple Stalactite hanging from the ceiling, which consists of more than one million clicked stapes that have been interlocked together. Other pieces include a slightly elevated ‘carpet’ of eraser shavings; ball points removed from pens; interstate lines cut out from Atlas maps; staples removed from a utility pole resurrected into form; and other artworks where time and repetition are an integral part of the process.

Newton currently lives in Waco, Texas and teaches art at McLennan Community College. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and a master of fine arts degree from Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Mary Matteson-Parrish Art Gallery is a teaching gallery at LSC-Montgomery, and the presentations and artwork provided are free to the community. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
