Medical Laboratory Technician Application Information

All applicants are highly encouraged to attend at least one program information session prior to applying to the MLT program.

In addition to the general admission requirements of Lone Star College (LSC), the following are requirements that must be met in order to apply for admission to the MLT program:

  1. Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0.
  2. Complete ENGL 1301, PSYC 2301, any college-level MATH course, MLAB 1101 (offered Fall and Spring), and PHIL 2306 with a grade of “C” or better.
  3. Students must submit official transcripts from colleges attended other than LSC.

Medical Laboratory Technology Checklist and Score Sheet

In addition to the MLT application packet, applicants will also be required to submit the following at the time of application:

  1. Completed criminal background check through Castle Branch

* Students must present a clear background check.  Some convictions will prevent the applicant from ultimate acceptance into the program. The student is responsible for all fees associated with background checks.

*If you are applying for admission to a College program or enrolling in a College program that may prepare you for an initial occupational license issued by a Licensing authority and/or if you later decide to change to a program that prepares you for an occupational license, please be advised of the following:

  1. An individual who has been convicted of an offense may be ineligible for issuance of an occupational license upon completion of the educational program.
  2. Licensing authorities that issue an occupational license to an individual who completes the educational program issue guidelines stating the reasons a particular crime is considered to relate to a particular occupational license and any other criterion that affects the decisions of the licensing authority.
  3. A state licensing authority that issues guidelines files those guidelines with the secretary of state for publication in the Texas Register.

*If Hepatitis B quantitative titer does not show immunity, applicant is required to submit proof of original immunization series, negative titer lab report, and proof of first dose of booster series post-negative titer.

Health Occupation programs do not consider applications from Prospective Students not at least 18 years old at the time of the program application's deadline-except that LSC-Tomball may honor a current contractual obligation with Klein ISD requiring the admission of students below the age of 18 years old. Any applicant that willfully misrepresents Material Information on the application will not be accepted or conditionally remain in a Health Occupation Program.

Admission Information

Applications for admission will be received during the fall semester before the program starts the following January. Because admission to the program is competitive, the students who are most likely to be accepted are those who score highest on the criteria established by the admissions committee. Those criteria may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Completion of the general education core courses in the MLT AAS degree plan
  2. Cumulative GPA
  3. GPA in pre-requisite courses
  4. Essay
  5. References
  6. Having an advanced degree

All successful applicants admitted to the MLT program will be required to attend a mandatory orientation session before starting the program. 

Post admission requirements required to remain in compliance with clinical sites:

  1. Current medical insurance - Students must provide documentation indicating they are covered (with their own name on the card) with at least “catastrophic or emergency care”.
  2. Purchase of account for documentation upload and immunization tracking through CastleBranch.
  3. Negative urine drug screening by a provider approved by LSC
  4. Hepatitis B quantitative titer showing immunity (within previous 5 years)
  5. Hepatitis C Screening (within previous 1 year)
  6. Diphtheria-Pertussis-Tetanus (Tdap) vaccination (within previous 10 years)
  7. MMR quantitative titer showing immunity (within previous 5 years)
  8. Varicella quantitative titer showing immunity (within previous 5 years)
  9. Influenza vaccination - This immunization needs to be completed during each fall semester of the program.
  10. Tuberculosis testing (PPD) - PPD skin test results must be reported in “mm” (not just as positive or negative) with the date given and the date when read or submit a lab report for an IGRA (T-SPOT or Quantiferon Gold) test done within the past 3 months. If PPD or IGRA result is positive, you must submit a radiology report to specifically rule out active disease, along with the positive skin test report in “mm” or positive IGRA lab report. TB testing is only valid for one year and is required just before clinical courses start so it stays valid for the entire year. Note: All foreign-born students who have received the BCG vaccine are not exempt from the PPD screening test.
  11. Current Basic Life Support: Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association

*The only exception to verification of immunization will be a signed declination of immunization form from the State of Texas accompanied by an LSC Health Occupations Immunizations Waiver Form.

* Any negative titer, other than Hepatitis C, will require documentation of your previous immunizations, along with the negative titer lab report, and proof of booster(s)/re-vaccination. Immunization series will be required 2 times with 2 negative titer reports, and a letter from physician stating the student won’t ever convert. History of the disease is NOT sufficient; you must have the titers.

Essential Functions

In order to participate in the MLT program, students must be able to comply with program-designated essential functions or request reasonable accommodations to execute these essential functions. Requirements include a sound intellect; good motor skills: eye-hand coordination and dexterity; effective communication skills; visual acuity to perform macroscopic and microscopic analyses, or read procedures, graphs, etc.; professional skills such as the ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, to comprehend, analyze and synthesize various materials, as well as to hold sound psychological health and stability.

Progression requirements

Students must progress through the program as a cohort.  All courses in the MLT AAS degree plan must be completed with a grade of C or better to remain admitted in the program.

Equipment/uniform requirements

Students will purchase 2 sets of scrubs to be worn in the laboratory and clinical settings.

Hospital requirements

Additional requirements may be requested by individual clinical sites for clinical placement. The student must comply with these requirements in order to remain in the MLT program

Readmission/Reapplication Requirements

Readmission applies only to a student previously enrolled in the LSC Tomball MLT program.  Readmission is at the discretion of the admissions committee who will consider the following guidelines:

  • For readmission to be considered, the individual must submit a written request to the Program Director that includes:
    • Statement of intent to be readmitted into the MLT program
    • Explanation of departure from program
    • Detailed plan describing how the student plans to complete program successfully if readmitted
  • Readmission must occur within a maximum of one (1) calendar year; thereafter, the student must reapply for admission to the program.
  • Readmission is based on space available.
  • Only one (1) readmission will be allowed into the program.

Transfer Guidelines (internal & external)

Students seeking transfer into the MLT program from another accredited MLT program must:

  • Submit a letter explaining why you are transferring and requesting admission to the program.
  • Submit a letter from the current program certifying that the student is leaving in good standing status with the previous program. This includes a letter of recommendation from the previous Program Director AND a faculty member.
  • Submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges. 
  • Final acceptance of a transfer from an outside MLT program into the LSC Tomball MLT program is by unanimous approval of the admissions committee.
  • All LSC Tomball MLT program admission requirements must be met.
  • Admission as a transfer student can be considered only if prior program enrollment has been within three (3) months and all previous MLT coursework earned a grade of C or higher.
  • Program must have an available slot to place a transfer student in for admission.

Statement of Licensure Eligibility

The program will be applying for NAACLS accreditation/approval. Student eligbility to take certification examinations may depend on whether the program achieves "serious applicant" status.
