Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. It is recognized as the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity established for African American men. Originally formed as a study and support group for Black students facing racial discrimination and social isolation, the organization quickly evolved into a brotherhood committed to scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity.  The founders, known as the Seven Jewels, were Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. Their vision created a movement that has grown into hundreds of undergraduate and graduate chapters worldwide, producing leaders across many professions and communities.
Aims: "Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love For All Mankind,"
Motto: "First of All, Servants of All, We Shall Transcend All."

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., has a long tradition of service and civic engagement through several national programs. Go to High School, Go to College encourages youth to pursue academic excellence and higher education. A Voteless People is a Hopeless People is a voter education and civic engagement initiative that promotes political awareness and participation. Project Alpha provides mentoring and education for young men, focusing on personal responsibility and leadership. Brother’s Keeper emphasizes community leadership and mentorship, while the fraternity’s longstanding partnership with the March of Dimes supports maternal and infant health initiatives.

Alpha Phi Alpha has produced influential leaders in civil rights, government, business, academia, and entertainment. Notable members include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, W. E. B. Du Bois (honorary member), Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Paul Robeson, Lionel Richie, and Hill Harper. Members of the fraternity have made lasting contributions to society through leadership, advocacy, and service.
