Future Entrepreneur Accepted to Elite Mays Business School

Layan GhabinLayan Ghabin, an 18-year-old Lone Star College-CyFair honors student, is excited to be one of only 100 transfer students accepted nationwide into Mays Business School at Texas A&M University this fall.

“Acceptance into Mays was a great achievement. It’s a competitive process and it made me work harder,” said Ghabin. “It’s scary to think I’ll be the youngest in my classes at A&M, but I’m proud of myself.”

Ghabin, whose first language in Arabic, has plenty to be proud of as she also graduated high school in the United Arab Emirates in Dubai at age 16. While in high school, she attended a two-week leadership camp in Greece and took on officer roles in student life, including spearheading graduation for 800.

When her family moved to Houston in 2016, she discovered an interest in business economics thanks to her passionate LSC-CyFair professor Dr. Amlan Datta (a Faculty Excellence Award winner.) She got involved in the Economics Club serving as secretary and then vice president of the student organization.

As she was earning her associate degree maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Ghabin worked part-time at LSC-Cypress Center as an assistant in advising and student services. Her supervisor Academic Advisor Susan Martin said she watched Ghabin quickly and effectively learn a myriad of processes, procedures, and new technological platforms as well as develop keen customer service and communication skills. To be accepted in the highly selective Mays Business School, students need to stand out and she does, Martin said.

“Layan possesses the right combination of drive, intelligence, and interpersonal skills required to excel in her educational and professional endeavors,” said Martin. “She is exceptionally motivated, sharp and inquisitive. I am confident she will go on to become a very accomplished business person.”

In addition to pursuing a bachelor’s and master’s degree, Ghabin’s career goal combines her love for clothing (from modeling to designing) with a desire to have her own business.

LSC-CyFair registration is open for fall classes starting Aug. 27. For information on summer transfer university visits at LSC-Cypress Center, contact Martin at Susan.R.Martin@LoneStar.edu.
