Lone Star College-Tomball Launches Critical Conversations Series

TOMBALL, TX:  In an increasingly diverse environment, LSC-Tomball is committed to a culture that supports, respects and includes all communities.  As part of that effort, the college has initiated the Critical Conversations Speaker Series, with the purpose of providing opportunities to explore and discuss cultural, ethnic and racial matters and offer participation in activities that effect positive change.

The first in the series features a conversation on Cultural Biases in STEAM Education presented by Ansley Booker, Ph.D., the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Mercer University.

Please register for the WebEx presentation to be held November 10, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. (CT).

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Math and is an educational philosophy that seeks to ignite an interest in the arts and sciences in children beginning at an early age.  Dr. Booker has published and presented extensively on the experiences of African American women and minority students in STEAM education and student affairs and served as a mentor and volunteer for numerous community programs.

Jeremy Kirk, M.Ed., is LSC-Tomball’s Director of Diversity and Inclusion, and is responsible for the Critical Conversations Speaker Series.  He believes participation and feedback will bring to the surface conflicting ideas and beliefs related to inequalities:

“If we want an inclusive and equitable community, we must continue to learn, grow and challenge our own worldview in light of others.  By doing so, we’re able to truly access the power of many diverse experiences that comprise our college and our community.”
