Summer Bridge Program for First-time College Students

Are you ready for college? Lone Star College-Kingwood is offering a Summer Bridge program to ease the transition for first-time college students.  This program is for students who need extra academic work to place into college credit courses.

"The Summer Bridge Program offers the opportunity for first-time college students to be at college level by fall 2008," says Stephanie Hoefar, LSC-Kingwood Summer Bridge Coordinator.

The four-week program offers English 0307 (writing) and Math 0310 (intermediate algebra). Graduating seniors who passed the high school exit TAKS test but did not score high enough to place into college level courses and those who have finished high school or a high school equivalency program but who have never been to college are eligible for the program.

"Essentially what this program does is let students get these classes out of the way in a very concentrated way and be ready to begin the fall semester at a college level," says Hoefar.

Students only take one of these courses during the summer session.  In addition, the Summer Bridge Program focuses on improving success and retention rate of students beginning college at the developmental level.  Incorporated into the program are success strategies and information for students, as well as mentors for students to assist them with the transition into college.

Prospective students need to take on the following college placement tests: ASSET, COMPASS, or THEA to determine course placement.  An advisor at LSC-Kingwood can help you determine if you are eligible for this program and schedule a time to take the placement test.

The program begins July 21, 2008 with classes meeting Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. for four weeks. The program costs $150 for in-district students and $330 for out-of-district students. Textbooks will be supplied by the college and the first 30 to register and successfully complete the course with a "C" or better will receive a $100 scholarship for fall classes.
