Lone Star College names new executive vice chancellor

 Lone Star College has named Alicia B. Harvey-Smith, Ph.D., as executive vice chancellor.

Harvey-Smith, who will join LSC in October, will have responsibility over the areas of academic affairs, student services, the office of completion, the office of Texas Completes (a statewide consortium), the office of international programs, the University Centers, and the office of strategic planning and institutional effectiveness.

“Dr. Harvey-Smith has demonstrated an incredible record of helping students succeed while president of River Valley Community College,” said Dr. Stephen C. Head, LSC chancellor. “Her experience and knowledge will build upon our mission to provide comprehensive, high quality educational opportunities for our community.”

Before serving as president and CEO of River City Community College, Harvey-Smith held the position of vice president for student affairs at Baltimore City Community College.

A nationally-recognized educator, Harvey-Smith was appointed to the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Executive Board in June 2016. At AACC, she was also elected to the board of directors and served as chair of the Committee for Community College Advancement.

"This is a significant position with one of the largest and fastest-growing colleges in the country," said Dr. Harvey-Smith. “It is a true honor to join the Lone Star College leadership team and to support their exemplary work under the stellar leadership of Dr. Steve Head, chancellor and one of the foremost leaders in higher education.”

Harvey-Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Morgan State University, a Master of Science degree in Guidance & Counseling from The Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park in Counseling and Personnel Services with a concentration in Retention in Higher Education. She also holds a certificate from the Harvard University School of Education Competitively Selected Presidents Institute.
