LSC-Tomball College Hosts Signing Days

TOMBALL, TX:  Recently, Lone Star College-Tomball’s Division of Student Success held its first two College Signing Days at Tomball Memorial (TMHS) and Tomball High (THS). Between the two schools, 19 seniors committed to continuing their education at LSC-Tomball.

“We were so excited to host the first ever #CollegeSigningDay with TMHS and THS to celebrate our commitment to our community,” said Dr. Sarah Ho, LSC-Tomball Director of Advising and Counseling. “The seniors choosing to further their education post-high school is a commitment for them individually, but also to their families to pursue their educational and career dreams.”

Also at the College Signing Day events, other high school students received impromptu, personal advising according to their interest, such as cyber security programs, accounting, dual credit opportunities, and the different education paths one could choose when joining the Armed Forces.

“Sometimes, students don’t know about hidden careers, they’ve only heard about STEM,” said Richard Lewis, LSC-Tomball academic advisor. “First, I learn what the student’s goals are, then I show them the corresponding pathway. I truly enjoy seeing them graduate.”

Natalie Pena, a TMHS sophomore, gathered information about culinary arts, education degrees, and the LSC-Tomball’s Veterinary Technology program. Weitong Gao, a TMHS senior who plans to earn a Bachelor of Science in Biosciences from Rice University, enrolled in LSC-Tomball summer classes because, she said, “I’d feel more comfortable starting close to home.”

Luis Becerril, a THS senior, said he was “following in his brothers’ footsteps,” by attending LSC-Tomball. “I’m nervous about going to college,” he said. “My brother and I are the first from our family to go to college. I don’t know what to expect.”

LSC-Tomball Directors of Student Engagement, Advising, Admission and Records, as well as LSC-Tomball President, Dr. Lee Ann Nutt, were all present to assuage any fears and speak with individuals face-to-face. “We’re here to help you,” said Nutt. “Everyone here wants you to be successful, and we know that you can be.”

Maria De Oliveira, a 17-year-old THS senior, was already donning her LSC-Tomball Timberwolf colors, crimson red and a distinguished dark blue. As Oliveira signed her LSC-Tomball letter of commitment, her mother and sister, in the audience, beamed with pride.

“As high school seniors participate in final banquets, awards ceremonies and commencements, we were so thankful we could provide a unique celebration recognizing their transition from high school to college,” said Ho. “The seniors were genuinely excited to share their intended majors, sign the commitment letters, pose for pictures with Trevor, the LSC-Tomball mascot, all in honor of their new beginning as a Timberwolf.”
