 Tennis League Guidelines

Eligibility

Each participant in the Lone Star Sports Club Conference must always meet the following requirements during competition and affiliation with the team:

  • Must be a currently enrolled student with at least 6 credit hours.  Faculty, staff, and alumni are ineligible to participate.  If a player is graduating during the term of the current Lone Star Sport Club Conference league or tournament and is enrolled for less than the minimum hours required for eligibility, then a letter from the registrar stating that the player will be graduating the same term as the event must be submitted.
  • All participants must provide an ID (college/University ID) prior to each contest.  phone/paper copies of an ID will not be allowed.
  • Must represent the same institution.  A player may play for another school within the same school system provided his/her campus (based on currently enrolled credits) does not have a team and provided the player has the permission of the appropriate Rec Sports representative.
  • Players must not be listed on the varsity roster (squad list) in the same or related sport for the current academic year.
  • Players must not have been declared professional athletes in the same or related sport.
  • May not be on current academic probation during any contest.
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 during play

Rosters

All rosters must be turned in prior to the start of the season with a maximum of 12 eligible players (6 male and 6 female).  All players must meet the minimum requirements set forth by the league.  Any team that is in violation of this rule will receive a forfeit for every game the player is on the roster, whether he/she played or not.  If a player is found to be ineligible, the team will then be removed from the league and will not be allowed to participate in the Lone Star Sport Club Conference for at least one season.  The coach may be banned from the league permanently depending on the outcome of the investigation. Last day to make roster changes will be Monday, March 9.

Forfeits

All teams must participate in each of the scheduled Lone Star Sport Club tennis league matches.  Any team that forfeits a match will not advance into the league championship tournament.  Any team that receives two forfeits will be dropped from the league.  All teams need to provide a minimum of 2 male and 2 female players to participate.  A full team that consists of at least 4 males and 4 females is advised.

MATCH RULES

1. GAME SCORING

In the Lone Star Sport Club Conference Tennis League scoring is no-ad. This means a game is won by the first team to capture four points (15, 30, 40, game or 1, 2, 3, game). When the game score is deuce (3-3) (game point), the receiving team chooses which side is to receive the serve. In the mixed doubles set, the serve must be gender to gender at game point.

2. SET SCORING

A team match consists of five no-ad sets and includes men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles, and doubles, and one set of mixed doubles. (Mixed doubles are always played last.) The five-set format is the STANDARD WTT format used at the USTA Campus Championship. Each no-ad set is won by the first team to reach six games. A nine-point tiebreaker will be played at five games all in any set (see explanation of tiebreakers).

     • The order of sets: men’s and women’s doubles, men’s and women’s singles, finishing

        with mixed doubles.

3. MATCH SCORING

Five-set format (one set of mixed doubles)

Teams must submit the starting lineup prior to the match play. Lineups are locked during competition and changes cannot be made.  The team winner of the match will be determined by the total number of games won. If the overall score ends tied, an overtime Super-tiebreaker will be used for the 1st mixed doubles team. (See Super-tiebreaker if a tie occurs.)

4. TIEBREAKERS

Nine-Point Tiebreaker

A nine-point tiebreaker will be played at five games all in any set. The person who is next to serve begins the tiebreaker. Each player serves two points in succession starting from the deuce court. Players change sides after the first four points, only. The first team (or person) to score five points wins the tiebreaker. If the tiebreaker reaches 4-4, the person who served the eighth point serves the ninth (final) point. The receiver, however, has the choice of sides (except in mixed doubles, where they must be gender to gender). The winner of the ninth point is the winner of the set.

Super Tiebreaker

If the match enters a Super-tiebreaker, a coin toss will decide which team serves first in the Super-tiebreaker. The Super-tiebreaker is mixed doubles and should be treated as a new set and either player on the serving team may serve first. In addition, court positions may be changed (i.e. the person who played forehand position may switch to play backhand position). Each player serves two points in succession starting from the deuce court. Players change sides after the first six points, only. The first team to score seven points wins the Super-tiebreaker. If the Super-tiebreaker reaches 6-6, the person who served the 12th point will serve the 13th (final) point. Since this set is mixed doubles, the final serve will be gender to gender. The winner of the 13th point wins the Super-tiebreaker and the match. The Super-tiebreaker counts as one game in overall match scoring.

5. WARM-UP TIME

In the Lone Star Tennis League, you warm up with your teammates and are allowed a five-minute warm-up. All team members are encouraged to warm-up during this time. Once play has begun, a five-minute warm-up is allowed between sets. This must be adhered to so that all sets will be completed in the time allotted.

6. SERVICE ORDER

The home team serves first in all doubles sets. The visiting team serves first in the singles sets. NOTE: Since the serving order is predetermined, the receiving team selects from which end of the court they want to receive.

7. CHANGING ENDS

Players will switch sides of the court on odd numbered games.

8. COACHING

Coaching is not allowed throughout the match as it does interfere with continuous play. We encourage team members to stand along the court and support their team. Coaches are responsible for lineups and returning match scores.

9. PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to participate in our conference tournament, a player must attend at least one league match during the semester. Just being on the team roster doesn’t qualify a player to compete in the conference tournament.

TIE BREAKERS FOR POOL STANDINGS:

*Win-loss record of completed matches.

*Head-to-Head record among tied teams

(Only if the tie is between 2 teams).

*Best winning percentage (total games won divided by total games played) between teams with tied match records.

*The team with the most games won.

*The team with the least games lost.

*Play Super tiebreaker to determine the winner.
