We’re honored to support you. Use this quick guide to help you apply, avoid delays, and start using your education benefits with confidence.

  • Start your application at ApplyTexas
  • Select "Yes" to the military-affiliated question
  • Choose the option that best describes you (veteran, active duty, spouse, or dependent)
  • Do not select "N/A" if you are military-affiliated
  • This step gives you access to your Veteran Self-Service portal where you'll upload documents and track your status.

  • Your address determines your tuition rate
  • Make sure your current Texas address is correct before submitting

You'll upload your documents after you're admitted, so it's helpful to have them ready ahead of time.

Examples include:

  • DD-214 (for veterans)
  • Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
  • Official Military transcripts
  • All official College transcripts accredited and non-accredited

Having these ready helps you move faster after admission.

Be clear on which benefit(s) you plan to use:

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
  • Montgomery GI Bill (Ch. 30 or 1606)
  • VR&E (Chapter 31)
  • Chapter 35 (Dependents)
  • Hazlewood (Veteran, Legacy, or Dependent)

Click on the hyperlinks to apply for your VA benefits or Hazlewood benefits.

Tip: Apply early to avoid delays in certification.

Pick the major closest to your goal:

You may be eligible for a TSI (Texas Success Initiative) exemption based on your military service.

  • Submit your military documentation (such as DD-214 or active-duty orders) for review
  • Eligibility is not automatic documentation must be evaluated. Please email LSC-TranscriptEvaluation@lonestar.edu to request TSI exemption after your DD-214 or military transcripts have been received.

Note: If you've been out of school for a while, consider taking the TSI to assess your readiness.

Once accepted:

  • Check your myLoneStar email regularly
  • Upload documents in the Veteran Self-Service portal
  • Meet with a Veteran Advisor before registering for classes
  • Submit your Request for Certification (every semester)

  • Apply 4-6 weeks before the semester starts to give yourself enough time
  • Submit all transcripts early (from all colleges attended-accredited and non-accredited)
  • Connect with an advisor to make sure your classes align with your degree plan
