Getting Started at Lone Star College

We’re honored to support you. Use this quick guide to help you apply, avoid delays, and start using your education benefits with confidence.
- Start your application at ApplyTexas
- Select "Yes" to the military-affiliated question
- Choose the option that best describes you (veteran, active duty, spouse, or dependent)
- Do not select "N/A" if you are military-affiliated
- This step gives you access to your Veteran Self-Service portal where you'll upload documents and track your status.
- Your address determines your tuition rate
- Make sure your current Texas address is correct before submitting
You'll upload your documents after you're admitted, so it's helpful to have them ready ahead of time.
Examples include:
- DD-214 (for veterans)
- Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
- Official Military transcripts
- All official College transcripts accredited and non-accredited
Having these ready helps you move faster after admission.
Be clear on which benefit(s) you plan to use:
- Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
- Montgomery GI Bill (Ch. 30 or 1606)
- VR&E (Chapter 31)
- Chapter 35 (Dependents)
- Hazlewood (Veteran, Legacy, or Dependent)

Tip: Apply early to avoid delays in certification.
Pick the major closest to your goal:
- Explore avaialble credit programs to find the best fit
- Choose a major based on your career or transfer goals
- Have military experience? You may be eligible to receive college credit through Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
You may be eligible for a TSI (Texas Success Initiative) exemption based on your military service.
- Submit your military documentation (such as DD-214 or active-duty orders) for review
- Eligibility is not automatic documentation must be evaluated. Please email LSC-TranscriptEvaluation@lonestar.edu to request TSI exemption after your DD-214 or military transcripts have been received.
Note: If you've been out of school for a while, consider taking the TSI to assess your readiness.
Once accepted:
- Check your myLoneStar email regularly
- Upload documents in the Veteran Self-Service portal
- Meet with a Veteran Advisor before registering for classes
- Submit your Request for Certification (every semester)
- Apply 4-6 weeks before the semester starts to give yourself enough time
- Submit all transcripts early (from all colleges attended-accredited and non-accredited)
- Connect with an advisor to make sure your classes align with your degree plan
