Lone Star College-Montgomery Students Become Certified as Volunteer Tax Preparers

While most college students aren’t yet considering tax forms and W-2’s, Linda Estrada, along with more than 15 other accounting students from Lone Star College-Montgomery, has had her nose buried deep in tax laws and commercial tax preparation software since the start of the new year in order to become certified by the IRS as an official volunteer tax preparer.

Under the guidance of Madeline Brogan, professor of accounting at LSC-Montgomery, the students have committed to volunteering a minimum of 16 hours each throughout tax season to provide free income tax preparation for low-income families. Most of the students will be volunteering at the Neighborhood Tax Center located at the Aldine-Greenspoint Family YMCA in the Greenspoint area.

“The experience that these students are gaining is invaluable,” said Brogan. “Not only will they acquire increased confidence in their accounting skills, but they’ll understand the importance of community service.”
