LSC-Tomball CLASS and TEAM Food Pantry Partnership to Provide Assistance to Students

Establishing partnerships with Tomball area businesses and organizations is fundamental to Lone Star College-Tomball’s goal to help build a stronger community.  And when the partnerships lend a helping hand to those less fortunate, it is especially impactful.  The latest example of just such a partnership is the CLASS-Food Pantry Partnership, which assists LSC-Tomball students who have difficulty purchasing groceries. Lack of proper nutrition can hurt individuals both in, and out of, the classroom.

“We are grateful to TEAM for opening their food pantry to our students,” said Ms. Magdalena Mendoza-Starck, Director of Diversity & Inclusion at LSC-Tomball, who oversees the Center for Leadership, Academic and Student Success (CLASS). “We are fortunate to have TEAM as an extraordinary community partner.”

The CLASS-Food Pantry Partnership makes it simple, fast and private for students to apply for short-term assistance.  Students can apply online by completing a secure online form or they can meet in-person with a CLASS staff member to complete the request form.  To schedule an appointment, students can call 281-351-3357 or they can stop by West 103.

An on-campus food drive, organized by CLASS, is planned for October.  Food donations will help replenish TEAM’s food pantry.  CLASS Ambassadors and Scholars will also donate their time working in TEAM’s resale shop and food pantry.  CLASS also plans to conduct community service projects each semester in support of TEAM’s on-going assistance efforts.

Lone Star College-Tomball created the Center for Leadership, Academic and Student Success (CLASS) to support the increase of Hispanic and underrepresented student enrollment with the financial support of an HSI Title V Grant provided by the Department of Education in 2016. Under the Office of Strategic Initiatives, CLASS supports students, faculty, and staff through various programs that engage, develop, and promote student success.

?Tomball Emergency Assistance Ministries (TEAM) was established as a nonprofit organization in 1985, when 13 Tomball churches joined together to "follow Christ's command to love and provide for those in need" in their community. Over the years, as the population has grown, so have the demands for assistance. Last year alone TEAM provided assistance to almost 15,000 individuals and provided more than $270,000 in assistance. Today there are 21 local church sponsors.
