Splendora High School

During the fall 2008 semester a new initiative began between Splendora ISD and Lone Star College -Kingwood. Working closely with senior administration and counselors from Splendora ISD, our goal is to put in place a program that will create an avenue for students who wish to continue on to postsecondary education. According the Gates foundation, “national statistics on the progression of students from high school to college illustrate why it is imperative to better connect and integrate secondary and postsecondary schooling”. Through this partnership, LSC-Kingwood is offering state approved academic courses that can eventually transfer to any public institution in Texas, and can also be used to satisfy the high school graduation requirements. Students who elect to be in this program are challenged and supported to develop the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that lead to success in college.

Maintaining the rigor of the courses provided by the college on site at Splendora is important to the success of this program. Unlike traditional dual credit classes, these classes are staffed by LSC-Kingwood faculty. These faculty members possess the credentials necessary to teach course material at the college level in a class format that is exactly the same as courses on the college campus. The students are expected to be engaged in the class and take a greater responsibility for their own education. These expectations generally exceed those of a high school class. A collegiate relationship between the faculty and student is essential for the successful progression of the student.

All students enrolled in LSC-Kingwood classes at SHS will be afforded the opportunity to have access to all student support amenities on the campus. This includes student activities, clubs, library and student support services including free tutoring and advising. Our overall goal is to prepare individuals to take advantage of the many postsecondary education opportunities in our area and state.
