The Office of Leadership and Economic Development at Lone Star College actively drives regional economic progress by engaging with businesses, entrepreneurs, chambers of commerce, and economic development entities. Our efforts support a thriving business ecosystem through data-informed decision-making, workforce development, and strategic partnerships across the North Houston region.

Key Initiatives:

  • Business Intelligence & Research: Delivering insights on labor markets, industry trends, and demographics to support regional planning.
  • Community Assessments: Identifying local assets and opportunities to enhance economic performance.
  • Skills for Small Business (SSB) Program: In collaboration with the Texas Workforce Commission, we offer training grants for new and existing employees of small businesses.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Serving as a convening force between education, industry, and government to align priorities and strengthen economic resilience.

TWC Skills for Small Business (SSB) Grant

Lone Star College proudly administers the Skills for Small Business grant funded by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). This program provides an exciting opportunity for small businesses to request training for their employees to support the improvement of overall operations. Credit, continuing education, online, and non-published courses that are applicable to business needs and operations are eligible for funding. The grant does not cover books, supplies, or institutional fees unrelated to course tuition.

 

Program Highlights:

  • For Texas-based private businesses with 1–99 employees
  • Up to $2,000 per newly hired employee (employed less than 12 months)
  • Up to $1,000 per existing employee (employed more than 12 months)
  • Only W-2 full-time employees are eligible
  • Grant covers tuition only
  • Training must start within 6 weeks of application approval
