Cypress Center English and Writing Tutoring

The Cypress Center Tutoring Center is open!

Offering Face-to-Face, Live Online, or Asynchronous* English and Writing tutoring, provided to LSC students as a free service. (*Digital submission and return of documents.)

Our English and writing tutor, Darlene, is available for in-person, live online (Brainfuse), and asynchronous tutoring sessions. English and writing tutoring includes reading or writing assignments in any college course as well as assistance with preparation for the TSIA2 ELAR and essay placement tests. 

Types of assistance offered include:

  • Understanding writing assignments
  • Understanding the expectations for various types of writing
  • Finding a topic
  • Brainstorming
  • Overcoming writer's block
  • Developing strategies for note-taking and time management
  • Developing methods for reading more effectively
  • Organizing yourself to write
  • Finding a writing process that works well for you
  • Discovering and clarifying ideas
  • Developing a focus and/or thesis
  • Choosing key words, utilizing scholarly databases, and understanding the research process
  • Understanding how to summarize, paraphrase, and quote from research sources
  • Documenting research (MLA, APA, CMS, etc.)
  • Choosing the best way to organize or shape your material
  • Creating a strong argument
  • Revising your draft(s)
  • Understanding how to make use of feedback
  • Writing effective sentences
  • Working on voice and/or tone
  • Editing to create a polished final draft

English Tutoring Guidelines

Our goal is to assist students in developing their academic literary and writing skills. For best results, students should: 

  • Include any assignment guidelines and notes when submitting papers to a tutor.
  • Plan to seek tutoring help at least two to three days before the assignment due date.
  • Use our tutoring services with the expectation of working along with the tutors to improve their independent writing skills.

What Our Tutors Will Do:

  • Help you understand your assignment
  • Help you set goals for your writing
  • Help you brainstorm ideas for your essay
  • Help you identify your audience
  • Help you outline and draft your paper
  • Help you identify areas for possible improvement
  • Help you understand an instructor’s comments on graded papers
  • Help you learn proofreading techniques
  • Help you improve your general writing or reading skills

What Our Tutors Will Not Do:

  • Write your paper
  • Proofread or correct your paper
  • Develop ideas for your paper
  • Estimate the grade for you
  • Do research for your paper
  • Take responsibility for finding all the mistakes in your paper
  • Tell you what or how to write

Face-to-Face Tutoring

  • Bring your writing and assignment instructions to the Tutoring Center on campus in CY113 during the posted hours. (See posted hours to the right)
  • Walk-ins welcome or you could email an appointment request to save yourself a spot

Online Tutoring

For LIVE online sessions through BrainFuse:

Log in to your D2L, click on the "online learning" tile and then choose "Tutor Match" to make an appointment. Providing 24 hour notice is advised, but is not required in order to make an appointment. If you still have questions, click on this link and follow the directions there.

For asynchronous English and writing tutoring via email:

Please send the assignment 2 – 3 days before the due date. To submit your paper for online tutoring, you must send an email to CypressWC@lonestar.edu and include the following information:*

  • A Microsoft Word compatible copy of your paper
  • A Microsoft Word compatible copy of your assignment
  • Your name
  • Your student ID
  • The course name and number
  • Your professor’s name
  • The due date
  • The time due (if submitting for an online course)

If you omit any of the above information, your paper will not be reviewed.

For asynchronous English and writing tutoring via BrainFuse:

Log into BrainFuse through D2L, and find the Writing Lab tab on the right hand side of the home page and select 'Submit Paper'. Next, select 'Lone Star College Writing Tutor Review', then click on 'Select'. Enter all of the required information, and then finally upload your document and hit 'Submit'. You should receive your reviewed paper back within one business day. The turnaround time may increase depending on demand.

Disclaimers:

When seeking online tutoring, please understand that same day and due date tutoring is not guaranteed and should not be expected. Please give yourself as much time as possible to work through the stages of the writing process.

The Cypress Center Writing email is checked twice a day, Monday – Thursday. Any submissions sent after 1:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday may not be seen until the following business day but will be returned within two days of receipt of your submission. Any submissions sent after 12:30pm on Thursday may not be reviewed until Monday. The Writing Center on the CyFair main campus has in-person and asynchronous offerings on Fridays and Saturdays if you require assistance on those days.
