Maverick Memories

Below are shared memories contributed by faculty, staff, alumni, and students. Check back often as we share our Maverick's stories throughout the year.

Gloria Kessler
Faculty, BASS

The most important memory that I can share and do share with my students is that I was one of the first students on this campus in August 1995.  I was working in a human service position that I could not promote further without a degree.  I was encouraged by my colleagues to pursue my criminal justice degree, which I started at "Montgomery College".  I was excited and scared to pursue this endeavor.  I was told by my family growing up that poor people do not go to college.  I believed it so I did not want to face the rejection if I tried to apply.  I decided to take a leap of faith and go down to the college and talk to someone.  I did not know what I was doing.  I was approached by a wonderful man named Dr. Earl Kampa.  He was kind and listened to my story.  He was in financial aid and walked me through the whole process because he knew I was fearful of the next step.  He will forever be in my heart for his kind spirit and how that changed the whole trajectory of my life and career.  I am a first time and first-generation college student.

Next memories are the wonderful faculty that I met in my time here at this campus.  Glen Killian, Steve Lewis and Kevin Sumrall all played a big part in my education here.  I changed my program of study halfway through and ended with a Human Services degree, which ironically I now teach in side by side by my former Professor Glen Killian.  LSC-Montgomery holds many memories for me as a student and now as a Professor.

Candida Garcia
Faculty, LA

I went to LSC-Montgomery in Spring of 1995 before the new campus opened. This was when it was located in a shopping center of Loop 336. I took one Spanish class from a wonderful professor. I was also attending classes at LSC-Tomball at the same time. I transferred to Sam Houston State University in the Fall but have fond memories of my semester at LSC-Montgomery. Flash forward thirty years, I am now an Adjunct Professor of History for LSC-Montgomery serving at the Conroe Center campus. I started in Summer II. Life has truly come full circle for me. I am so proud to have come home to LSC-Montgomery and to once again be a Maverick.
