LSC-Montgomery History

Lone Star College–Montgomery's founding president, Dr. Bill Law, began his presentations to the community by asking the audience to close its eyes and imagine that there was no LSC-Montgomery. After a few short seconds, he would laugh, "Impossible, isn't it?" Indeed, it is. For over thirty years, LSC-Montgomery has been an integral part of the community and has made significant contributions to the county through educational opportunities and community support.

"Lone Star College–Montgomery has fulfilled the expectations of so many people," said John Wiesner, a Conroe business leader and longtime supporter of the college. "Education is a unifier, and in that respect, nothing has unified Montgomery County like LSC-Montgomery."

Demographically, the college has mirrored the county in terms of the students it serves, a point that LSC-Montgomery's second president, Dr. Tom Butler, saw as critical. "A community college is all about meeting the needs of the entire community - not just certain segments. When I look at the totality of what LSC-Montgomery offers, I see a nice mix of career programs, university transfer, continuing education, leisure and more."

Not surprisingly, the community has responded. As Montgomery County experienced rapid population growth and business expansion during the 1990's and well into the late 2000's, it was not surprising that LSC-Montgomery found itself as one of the fastest-growing community colleges in Texas. LSC-Montgomery increased its enrollment from 3,200 students in 1995 to almost 16,000 students in 2025. In spite of the rapid growth, the college has maintained its focus on the hiring of excellent faculty and staff members, ensuring that students' classroom and campus experiences would prepare them for the next level - whether it be a new career, transfer to a four-year university or entrance into the workforce.

As the college grew, so did the number of programs and services that it offered. LSC-Montgomery continued to expand its course and program options, offering certificate, associate and several bachelor's degree programs. Continuing Education programs have provided fast track certificate and course options, and specialty programs including the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), High School Equivalency Test Preparation (GED), Academy for Lifelong Learning (a program for seniors 50+) and LifePath (a program for students with cognitive learning disorders).

"Our continuous growth is a reflection of the commitment to excellence that our faculty and staff exhibit every day for our students," said Dr. Austin Lane, LSC-Montgomery's third president, during the college's celebration of its 15th anniversary in 2010. "I talk all the time about taking LSC-Montgomery to new heights. They are the ones making it happen."

The innovative style that characterized the early years of LSC-Montgomery continued to keep the college focused on providing students and the community with a world-class learning environment. At the college's 20th anniversary celebration, Dr. Rebecca Riley, LSC-Montgomery's fourth president remarked, "There are very few entities in our area that have had such an impact – economically and socially – on so many people. I have no doubt that 20 years from now – 200 years from now – LSC-Montgomery will continue to serve the community in new and exciting ways."

As the college begins its next chapter, it's steadfast focus remains the same: to continue cultivating learning environments supported by innovation, equity and connection.

"As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of our campus, I am filled with both pride and deep gratitude. This milestone is not just a reflection of the years that have passed, but a testament to the dedication, resilience, and unwavering spirit of those who have helped shape this community over the past three decades. As part of a larger system, our campus has grown into its own identity: grounded in shared values, strengthened by partnership, and deeply committed to serving students and families with excellence. As we look to the future, may we continue to grow with the same courage and heart that have carried us to this moment. The world needs what this community offers: resilience, integrity, creativity, and compassion. Let this anniversary not just be a celebration of where we’ve been, but a recommitment to where we’re going", said Dr. De'Reese Reid-Hart, current LSC-Montgomery President.
