MUSIC AUDITIONS INFORMATION

SCHOLARSHIPS

  • Music Scholar: Must be a declared music major at LSC-UP and will be enrolled in the music theory/ear training & sight singing sequence at LSC-UP during the time of the scholarship.
  • Vocal Scholar: Must be enrolled in majorsí private voice lessons (MUAP 1282 or 2282) and/or one of the MUEN vocal ensembles at LSC-UP during the time of the scholarship.
  • Instrumental Scholar: Must be enrolled in majorsí private instrumental lessons (MUAP x2xx) or one of the MUEN instrumental ensembles at LSC-UP during the time of the scholarship.
  • Please fill out the scholarship audition form (LoneStar.edu/UP-MusicScholarship) prior to your audition.

ENSEMBLES

  • String Ensemble (MUEN 1131): A performance ensemble specializing in music for small string groups. Violinists, violists, cellists, double bassists, and pianists are welcome to audition. Directed by Christoph Wagner.
  • Percussion Ensemble (MUEN 1134): This course involves the study and performance of music compositions for small percussion groups. Directed by Lamar Burkhalter.
  • Concert Choir (MUEN 1141.6301): This ensemble exposes students to a wide variety of traditional choral repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the present. Students in this ensemble learn to apply healthy vocalism, critical listening skills, and expressive musicianship in this immersive choral experience. Directed by Dr. Ryan Brown.
  • University Park Chorale (MUEN 1141.6201): Members of the community and LSC-UP students will perform vocal chamber music and masterworks in this Wednesday evening ensemble, directed by Dr. Ryan Brown.
  • Chamber Singers (MUEN 1151): A small vocal ensemble performing sacred and secular choral literature of various eras including madrigals. Directed by Dr. Ryan Brown.

PRIVATE & GROUP LESSONS

  • Private Lessons (MUAP) in Voice, Instruments, or Composition
  • Class Piano II-IV Placement (MUSI 1182/2181/2182): Audition to be placed into a higher level of Class Piano.
  • No audition is required for Class Piano I, Class Guitar, Class Voice, or Percussion Class.

MUSIC INDUSTRY CLASS

  • Professional Development for Musicians (MUSC 1191): This course will assist students in developing the critical skills required to be successful musicians in the professional world. Students will learn how to write professional résumés, CVs, cover letters, and bios; effective audition, rehearsal, and performance technique; and the basics of music law and music business. 

WHAT TO PREPARE

Scholarships

  • Please prepare two contrasting pieces to sing or play on your instrument. An accompanist will be provided if needed, so please be sure to bring your sheet music, unless it is an unaccompanied piece (vocalists MUST use an accompanist for their audition pieces). Please fill out the scholarship form through LoneStar.edu/UP-MusicScholarship prior to your audition as well.

Vocal Auditions: Concert Choir/University Park Chorale, Chamber Singers, or Private Voice Lessons

  • Prepare a song of your choosing with accompaniment. If you are auditioning in-person, please provide sheet music for the accompanist. If you are submitting an audition online, please perform with a karaoke/backing track on your video.

Percussion Ensemble & Private Percussion Lessons

  • Prepare 1-2 pieces that demonstrate your current skill level.

Professional Development for Musicians (Offered next in Fall 2022)

  • INSTRUMENTALISTS/SINGERS: Prepare 1-2 contrasting pieces. Perform these on video (singers, use accompaniment or karaoke tracks).

  • COMPOSERS/SONGWRITERS: Submit 2-3 contrasting compositions, fully notated and/or recorded (MIDI realizations are acceptable). E-mail them as pdf files to Aaron.Alon@lonestar.edu.

  • AUDIO ENGINEERS, PRODUCERS, etc.: Non-performers should schedule an interview with Professor Aaron Alon by sending him an e-mail at Aaron.Alon@lonestar.edu. If you have any samples of your work to share, you can also e-mail them to Professor Alon.

 

Class Piano/Private Piano Studio Placement

  • Prepare 1-2 contrasting pieces of your choice that demonstrate your proficiency and level of playing. Also, prepare 1-2 scales of your choice. If you are submitting an audition online, please perform these on video, making sure that we can clearly see your hands on the keys.

Private Lessons in Other Instruments

  • Prepare 1-2 contrasting pieces that demonstrate your current skill level. If you are submitting an audition online, please perform these works on video.

DRAMA AUDITIONS INFORMATION

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are awarded to students for Performance and Design/Technical Theatre.

  • Performance: Students must be enrolled in Theatre Practicum and participate in the semester production. For the performance scholarship, you must present two contrasting monologues at the time of the semester production auditions. If you are a musical theatre performer, please also prepare 32 bars of a musical theatre work and provide an accompaniment track. 
  • Design/Technical Theatre: You must be enrolled in Theatre Practicum and participate in the semester production. At time of the semester production auditions, you must present a history of design/technical theatre work and interview for the scholarship.

SPRING PRODUCTION

Potential roles in semester productions to be filled:
