Lone Star College 2014 Fall Convocation
Lone Star College held its first system-wide convocation since 2010 this past Monday. It was a wonderful opportunity for faculty and staff to come together and celebrate our many successes and accomplishments and focus on our future goals.
It was also a chance for me to personally speak about our students, values, core principles, vision and our future. I would like to thank LSCS Trustees Priscilla Kelly, Linda Good and Ron Trowbridge for attending along with over 1,700 employees! I left feeling very good about the future of our college system and look forward to working with everyone to continue building on our successes and making Lone Star College the premier learning institution in the United States. It was a pep rally atmosphere at LSC-CyFair. Employees wore college t-shirts, students were cheer dancers and administrators coached wearing hoodies. The Professional Support Staff Association and Faculty Senate Presidents were referees, and president Dr. Levy got in on the fun, playing the role of the star quarterback!
LSC-Kingwood kicked off its 30th anniversary in style with nearly 300 current and former employees (wearing their 30th anniversary T-shirts) forming a big 30 human figure on the grass in our main quad. It felt like homecoming with all five of the former college presidents on hand, along with many of the 50 founders of the “East Campus” which started in 1984. To commemorate our anniversary, renowned sculpture James Surls created a unique sculpture that was unveiled.
It was a joyous and moving time at the LSC-Montgomery convocation. The response was terrific and was capped off by Dr. Ann Snyder, president & CEO of the Interfaith of The Woodlands announcing that Dr. Lane was selected as a hometown hero and will be recognized at an Oct. 4 gala. Dr. Lane was very surprised and touched by the recognition.
It was a “Back to the Future” theme for the LSC-North Harris convocation. The current day staff surprised the faculty members who were hired from that decade with pictures and brief anecdotes of their positive influence over the past 40 years. They then moved to the present with a wonderful Student Success video created in 2009. Three of those outstanding students on the video were able to attend the convocation and give an update on their success and let us know that LSC-North Harris was a real part of changing their lives and futures!
LSC-Tomball was treated to some very powerful speakers during its convocation ceremony. Dr. Lazenby, LCS-Tomball’s first president, delivered historical context while Tomball Mayor Gretchen Fagan, Tomball Chamber President Bruce Hillegeist provided a resounding voice of support for the college and the important role the college plays in the community. Following an informal BBQ lunch, a question and answer session was held to talk about future plans including the LSC-Creekside Center and the bond referendum.
The convocation ceremony at LSC-University Park was uplifting and informative. Dr. Andrew Hamilton from the University of Houston Honors College delivered a very engaging talk, challenging the faculty and staff to continue their hard work in making sure LSC students have the resources to succeed.
