Frequently Asked Questions

Who can receive tutoring?
Tutoring is available to all Lone Star College System students and members of the local community ages 14 or above.

Note: When registering for a tutoring session, your student ID card or your HCPL Library card is appreciated.

How do I arrange a tutoring session?
Tutoring is carried out on a “drop-in” basis: Come to the Tutoring Area during our operating hours, and a tutor will be there to help you.

Who are the tutors?
Some of our tutors are “peer” tutors: in other words, students. Others are “professional” tutors: school teachers or college instructors. All of them take our tutor training program, which is certified by the CRLA (College Reading & Learning Association).

How much tutoring can I receive?
You can have a maximum of 30 minutes of one-on-one Reading & Writing or ESOL/CELTA tutoring each day. But we hope you will stay longer, to make use of our other resources, take part in any available group tutoring sessions, etc.  Math & Science tutoring is done on a "hovering" basis.  Math & Science tutors will help you with a couple of problems, then ask you to try some on your own in order to promote independent learning while they help someone else.  A tutor will check on your progress shortly.

Will the tutor teach me?
Our tutors do not act as teachers: Their job is to help you to complete assignments set by your regular teachers. However, our tutors can direct you to useful learning and practice resources, including on-line programs such as Academic.com and Aztec. You can access these resources in the Tutoring Area and the Library.

Will tutors write, correct or proofread an assignment for me?
No, but they will assist you with an assignment by:

  • helping you to decide what is important in an assignment
  • asking you questions to help you to clarify your objectives
  • listening and making suggestions.

Will tutors grade an assignment?
No, but they will help you to evaluate your assignment yourself.

Can I drop off an assignment?
No. The purpose of a tutoring session is for a tutor to help you to decide how to revise or complete an assignment. So you need to be present.

Can the tutor help me to improve my study skills?
Yes. The tutor can direct you to web-based and other resources that will help you to develop your study skills.

When should I come for a tutoring session?
Remember that you will need to revise and complete an assignment after discussing it with a tutor. So don’t wait until the day your assignment is due!

What should I bring with me?
You need to bring your assignment. You should also bring any notes, outlines or drafts that you have already made. If you bring an assignment previously graded by your instructor, with the instructor’s comments on it, we will be able to help you even more.

How can I prepare for a tutoring session?
Before you come, think carefully about what you want from the tutorial. Be ready to discuss your objectives with the tutor.
