LSC-Tomball By Design

Lone Star College-Tomball By Design is an initiative aimed at taking advantage of a unique opportunity provided to us by a variety of factors. Our recent hiring of two new vice presidents, the participation by several employees in a separation incentive program offered by the System, and the emergence from the pandemic has positioned us to evaluate things from a new perspective. As a college, we now have the chance to look closely at all aspects of our operation and to REimagine, REinvigorate, and, if determined necessary, REdesign some aspects of the way we work.

Dr. Nutt introduced the LSC-Tomball by Design concept in an email on September 3 which featured the following video:

The Office of the President hosted a virtual President's Fall Forum on October 6 at which LSC-Tomball by Design was further discussed.

Dr. Nutt provided further information on the progress of our efforts in her Nutt's to You on December 9:

Through a thoughtful process outlined below, we will evaluate three key areas:

  • Financial - Bring LSC-Tomball into alignment with the LSC system on a per-student cost allocation, take a more intentional approach to budget development and management, and adjust
budget expenditures based on changes to organizational structure.

  • Structural - Consider the organizational structure of the college, specifically in the Instructional,
Student Success, and Office of Strategic Initiatives divisions and including LSC-Creekside.

  • Shared Leadership - Formalize decision-making processes to be intentional and transparent while ensuring collaboration across the college.

Our evaluation will be based on the Design Thinking model and is comprised of four parts:

  • Understand - We'll do research, ask questions, and identify challenges that we can confront or mitigate as a college. This phase will be data driven and will engage many stakeholders in the conversation through a variety of means.

  • Plan - In this phase, we'll take evidence gathered and begin to identify possible solutions.

  • Communicate - This is less a phase and more a mantra. Information will be shared with all stakeholders throughout each step of the LSC-Tomball By Design process.

  • Implement - Based on evidence gathered and solutions derived, we'll come up with actions that will be executed during this phase. Although some actions will take place sooner than others, our goal is implement by Spring 2022.
