LSC-Montgomery Physics Department

Physics holding the world togetherAt LSC-Montgomery, the physics department offers a diverse array of courses, all designed to make the subject engaging, relevant, and accessible to students at any level of study.

Through student-centered teaching methods and hands-on experiences, LSC-Montgomery works to foster an appreciation for physics… the study of nature and the underlying laws that guide our world and universe.

Course Information

Math-based Physics Courses

These courses are taught with an emphasis on problem solving and lab experiences, in order to build the critical thinking skills & learn the science/lab practices and habits, that are critical to success in STEM-based areas of study.

PHYS1401 - College Physics I: Taught using algebra and trigonometry, this course explores the principles of motion, force, energy, thermodynamics, waves, and sound, and the many natural phenomenon and worldly applications to which they relate.  *This course is appropriate for meeting pre-professional medical program requirements.

PHYS1402 - College Physics II: Taught using algebra and trigonometry, this course is a continuation of PHYS1401.  This course takes a dive into the unseen world that is all around us, with a study of the principles and applications of electricity, magnetism, light, and optics.  *This course is appropriate for meeting pre-professional medical program requirements.

PHYS2425 - University Physics I: Taught using calculus, this course explores the principles and applications of classical mechanics and thermodynamics.  There is an emphasis on the skills of experimental design, data collection and analysis, and scientific communication.  **This course is appropriate for STEM majors.

PHYS2426 - University Physics II: Taught using calculus, this course is a continuation of PHYS2425.  This course explores the principles and applications of electricity, magnetism, waves, sound, light, and optics.  Hands-on experience with circuits, as well as various sound and optical devices, provides a great foundation for engineering students of all types.  Once again, there is an emphasis on the skills of experimental design, data collection and analysis, and scientific communication.  **This course is appropriate for STEM majors.

Conceptual Physics Courses

These courses are taught from a conceptual (non-math-based) perspective that explores the broad range of physics topics through observational and hands-on experiences.

PHYS1410 - Elementary Physics: This course caters to those seeking a more approachable entry point, breaking down complex concepts into easily digestible components.  ***This course is appropriate for liberal arts and non-science majors.

PHYS1403 - Stars and Galaxies: Stellar Astronomy extends the exploration beyond Earth, inviting students to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos, specifically related to the universe outside of our solar system.  ***This course is appropriate for liberal arts and non-science majors.

PHYS1404 - Solar System: Planetary Astronomy extends the exploration beyond Earth, inviting students to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos, specifically related to our sun and its solar system.  ***This course is appropriate for liberal arts and non-science majors.
