LSC-Tomball Social Media Specifics

Below are a few more guidelines relevant to all types of engagement on social media on behalf of LSC-Tomball.

Should I Start My Own Channel?

College programs and divisions are allowed to set up social media accounts, but before doing so, we would suggest that you consider a few things. The more spread-out messages are, the fewer the number of people who see them and the less effective they will be. We encourage folks to send their messaging through College Relations to be shared on the college-level accounts because we have a large following and the maximum number of eyes will see it.

If you are certain that you will have consistent, targeted messaging that will appeal to a particular group, you could set up your own account in the social media platform that you feel would be most effective for the messaging you’ll be sending and go with that one, instead of trying to be everything on all platforms.

Questions to ask:

  • On which platform are the folks you are trying to reach?
  • What platform is the person who will be posting this stuff most familiar?
  • What is the nature of the messaging you’ll be posting (Mostly photos? Lots of texts? Short announcements?) and which platform suits that messaging best?
  • Do you have the resources for creating content on a daily basis?

The biggest challenge when starting these accounts is acquiring an audience. I would, therefore, start small and put all your efforts into an account you can make really attractive to users. If, going forward, you feel like you’d should spread to another platform, you can use the model you’ve established on your first account and expand.

Regulations for Beginning a Department/Organization Channel

If you decide to proceed, here are a few other rules/regs that we ask folks to follow for the accounts:

  • Please use the college name in the title (either Lone Star College-Tomball or LSC-Tomball) before the name of your department or organization.
  • Please don’t use the college logo as the profile picture, even in its secondary form
  • I’ll need to be made ADMIN on any Facebook accounts you create. For Twitter and Instagram, login credentials must be provided to LSC-Tomball College Relations or, for student organizations, the Office of Student Life. We’ll never write posts or censor content; this is just in case all of you take fabulous jobs at Harvard on the same day. We don’t want those accounts to be inaccessible and abandoned.
