Adriana Martinez ’23
LSC-North Harris | Social Work
For Adriana Martinez, a passion for helping others began before she became a Lone Star College student.
While in high school, Adriana participated in TRIO Upward Bound at Lone Star College, which helped her become more involved in community service. That involvement led her to volunteer with her local library, where she later secured an internship related to her studies in social work. There, she helped community members navigate applications, find local information and connect with available resources and assistance.
Adriana continued expanding her community involvement through a second internship with her local district office. The experience has given her a new perspective on how local government and community needs intersect and continues to show her different ways she could create change on a larger scale.
Her journey at LSC-North Harris was also shaped by the connections she made along the way. Adriana credits the smaller classes and relationships with advisors, professors and peers with helping her navigate obstacles and continue her education.
When losing financial aid limited her options, Adriana worked with an advisor to find a path forward. That experience ultimately helped reaffirm her direction in social work.
After earning her associate degree from Lone Star College in 2023, Adriana transferred to the University of Houston-Downtown, where she earned her bachelor's degree in social work. She is now pursuing her master's degree and hopes to continue improving her community, whether through creating a nonprofit or becoming more involved in local government and politics.
Her advice to students and fellow alumni is simple: stay organized, but make time to enjoy life. Adriana recommends using a planner when balancing school, work and other responsibilities while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
For Adriana, that balance includes volunteering, serving her community and making time for something she loves: going to concerts.
