Continuing Education

Continuing Education consists of fast-track certificates or courses to quickly train students for a high-demand job. Programs focus on the key technical and behavioral skills needed in the targeted occupation. Each certificate program includes either industry-recognized certification, State or National occupational accreditation. Classes are offered, day, evening, hybrid, weekend, and online. Continuing Education Programs offered at LSC-Tomball include Nurse Aide (CNA), Phlebotomy, Electrocardiography Technician, Sterile Processing, Occupational Therapy Practitioner Reentry Program, ACPE IV Sterile Compounding, CPR and General Education and Test Prep. 

A Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) helps patients or clients with healthcare needs under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse. A CNA can work in nursing homes, hospitals, adult day care centers, personal homes, assisting living facilities, hospice care, mental health facilities or even the prison system. CNAs provide basic quality-of-life needs for patients and help them with daily tasks they are unable to perform independently
This program is fully in-person and prepares students for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services State Examination. Attendance is required to obtain hours required by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability. Lecture and skills training is in-person at the Lone Star College Tomball Health Science Building. Clinical training for this program is offsite at a local Residential Care Facility. Additional requirements may be required by the clinical training site.

Career Opportunities for Nurse Aide Program Graduates 
Students who complete the Nurse Aide program and obtain certification are eligible for a wide range of entry-level positions within the healthcare field. These roles are commonly found in hospitals, long-term care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, retirement communities, and community clinics.

Phlebotomy technicians, or simply phlebotomists, are professionals who draw blood from patients. They take these blood samples to pass to laboratory and further check for health issues, like diseases, bacteria, cholesterol, etc. In the meantime, phlebotomists can work in all kinds of medical facilities, from hospitals to private laboratories.
Phlebotomist are responsible for Collecting and tagging specimens exactly as outlined in each medical requisition. Developing effective collection techniques as they relate to groups such as pediatric and geriatric patients. Properly package each specimen and ensure that every specimen is delivered to the laboratory on time. Maintaining an organized and clean work area based on state health laws and the guidelines of our medical organization and answering patient questions regarding collection techniques and offer additional resources on the collection process if a patient requests them. The program prepares the student for 1 of 2 national exams American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Career Opportunities for Phlebotomist Program Graduates
Phlebotomist have diverse career opportunities, including direct roles as Phlebotomists in hospitals, clinics, blood banks, and diagnostic labs, as well as specialized roles like Mobile Phlebotomist, Pediatric Phlebotomist, or Forensic Phlebotomist. Furthermore, a phlebotomy certification can serve as a stepping stone into other healthcare roles, such as Medical Assistant, Laboratory Technician, or even continuing on to become a Registered Nurse or Physician's Assistant with further education.

Monitor techs, also referred to as cardiac monitor technicians or EKG technicians, observe the heart beats and electrocardiograms (EKG) of patients in intensive care units, or ICUs. They typically work in hospitals and sit at computers outside of patients' rooms to perform their job. In this class you will learn fundamentals of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology. Includes basic electrocardiography procedures, interpretation of basic dysrhythmias, and appropriate treatment modalities.

Career Opportunities for Electrocardiography (EKG) Monitor Technician Graduates
EKG monitor technicians can work in a variety of health care settings such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, and long-term care facilities where they monitor patient cardiac activity and detect heart conditions. Other avenues include specialized cardiovascular diagnostic centers, research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and medical equipment sales.

Sterile Processing Technicians are the first line of defense against infection in healthcare environments. Their role is so important that hospitals and other facilities wouldn’t be able to function without them. They are critical to a safe healthcare facility and are responsible for ensuring equipment and instruments are contaminant-free and safe to use. The main duty of a Sterile Processing Technician is to ensure that instruments used by medical personnel are contaminant-free. In the Sterile Processing Technician program at Lone Star College, students are instructed on proper techniques to clean and sterilize medical instruments and to understand microbiology and infection control methods. You need to be patient since you will spend your whole shift washing, flushing, drying, then sterilizing every screw, hinge, tube, and crevice. Then each piece must be reassembled properly for patient safety and surgical effectiveness. Lone Star College students learn the proper names and categories of medical instruments and how to properly transfer and store instruments to keep them contaminant-free. The program includes classroom study, practice in lab environments and hands-on, real-world experience. Sterile processing technicians have no direct contact with patients, but their job has a direct impact to the patient’s safety.

Career Opportunities for Sterile Processing Technician Graduates
Sterile processing technicians (SPTs) can find numerous career opportunities in hospitals, surgery centers, dental offices, and outpatient care centers, with potential for upward mobility into roles such as supervisor, lead technician, or educator. Some technicians may also pursue further education to transition into related healthcare fields, including nursing, surgical technology, or infection prevention.

The Lone Star College-Tomball CPE program offers sterile compounding certification in a home study/live workshop format that fulfills continuing education (CE) requirements for pharmacists and certified pharmacy technicians teaching them the principles and techniques for safely preparing intravenous (IV) medications in sterile environments, adhering to USP Chapter <797 guidelines. All applicants must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist in order to participate in this course.

The Lone Star College-Tomball Pharmacy Technology Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

The Occupational Therapy Practitioner Re-Entry Program is designed for previously licensed occupational therapy practitioners whose license has lapsed beyond two years and who would like to rejoin the workforce.
The course of study covers eight weeks of online instruction which includes one course in a preferred practice area and one management course followed by four weeks of supervised clinical practice.
Participants who successfully complete both the online and clinical coursework will receive a Certificate of Completion which satisfies the requirements for re-licensure in the state of Texas. Residents of other states will need to verify with their state the requirements for re-licensure.
This program meets the requirements for a professional re-entry program for occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants as defined by both the American Occupational Therapy Association and the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners and is designed to refresh your knowledge in your area of practice interest as well as explore current trends in the profession.

The CPR for Healthcare Providers course trains participants to identify life-threatening emergencies, give appropriate CPR, and AED training. This CPR course integrates the Heart Code BLS program. This course meets the American Heart Association requirements.

DEVSC 3900506 GED FULL REVIEW
GED® Full Review Instruction in the content areas of the GED® Test: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science.
A person must be 17 years of age to take this class. The GED® test must be registered for separately. 
College Math Preparation Courses
This preparation course is used to assist with college math content or Texas Success Initiative (TSIA2) Lone Star College-Tomball Continuing Education offers basic mathematics in-person at a fraction of the cost of traditional tutoring. These courses are tailored to individual subject areas the student needs support in, rather than a “one size fits all” approach.
DEVSC 3900030 Preparatory Algebra I
Prerequisite: This class is recommended for students requiring significant help to be successful in the foundational college math classes.
Recommend for students who earn a TSIA2-Math Score of <950 and Diagnostic Scores of 1 or 2.
DEVSC 3900031 Preparatory Algebra II
Prerequisite: This class is recommended for students needing additional help to be successful in the foundational college math classes, or those who have completed Preparatory Algebra I.
Recommend for students who earn a TSIA2-Math Score of <950 and Diagnostic Score of 3.

Need Financial Assistance?

You may be eligible for state or federal grant funding through the Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) or the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) - these are not loans. 
TPEG is available based on an applicant's eligibility and financial need. Many workforce certificate courses are eligible for TPEG funding until funds are depleted. Go to our Financial Aid website and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Workforce Scholarships, provided through a third-party vendor, allow eligible students to obtain the skills needed to successfully reenter the workforce. The scholarship can cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, supplies, and other related costs for individuals who enroll in one of the following Workforce Programs.

Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL)

The Academy for Lifelong Learning is a membership* community in Continuing Education that offers free and low-cost classes, events and activities for adults aged 50 and older. Choose from technology, health and wellness, financial planning, community service projects, literary discussion groups, genealogy, arts and crafts, history, and more. There are no educational prerequisites required to attend classes.
*The $25 registration fee covers membership for the academic year. All classes are free (includes all Lone Star College campuses) with the registration fee. Membership fees are non-refundable and required annually.
