Global warming is one of many topics that experts have heavily debated over the years.
The general idea is that Earth will continue to warm, which will cause severe disruptions on the planet. Dr. Tom Rehm, retired chemical engineer, will discuss global warming, related problems and practical solutions on Oct. 24 at 12:30 p.m. The hour-long presentation, “Global Warming is not Cool,” will take place in the Student Conference Center at Lone Star College-Kingwood.
“I will provide irrefutable evidence that the planet is warming and will discuss solutions to fix it,” Rehm said. “Global warming is an important topic that needs to be discussed and solved now to protect the planet for future generations.”
Rehm stated that global warming began when society became industrialized. This phenomenon released greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, which has and will continue to cause serious disruption on the planet. His goal is to educate the audience on the science behind global warming, which he hopes will encourage more individuals to help solve the problem.
“Global warming is responsible for the sea level rise and the accelerated melting of ice sheets in Greenland and the Antarctic,” Rehm said. “It also disrupts the jet stream in North America which causes our weather events to become more extreme.”
Rehm goes on to state that global warming is responsible for the severe weather that has and will continue to affect the country such as New England’s unusual winter in 2017 and catastrophic hurricanes (i.e., Harvey).
“The number of storms might not increase, but their severity is worsening,” he said.
At the “Global Warming is not Cool” presentation, the retired engineer will discuss various solutions such as improving energy efficiency in industrial processing, electrifying mass transit, and use of Generation IV nuclear power.
Rehm started his career as a refinery design engineer with Universal Oil Products (UOP), then was a research engineer at the Amoco Research Center, followed by a stint investigating industrial accidents primarily for litigation, and finally as a Loss Prevention engineer with Saudi Aramco in Arabia. He is the 2018 chair-elect of the South Texas Section (STS) of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and was the STS Human Resources Officer during 2016-2017. Rehm is active in AIChE as a member of the AIChE Climate Change Task Force, a director of the Safety and Health Division, and a member of the CCPS Process Safety Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.
