Dr. Bennie Lambert, LSC-CyFair Vice President of Student Success and author of How to Grow from No, raises the bar when it comes to positivity and success. Learn techniques and daily practices to rise to the occasion in visioning and realizing your business potential.

Bennie Lambert endearingly dubbed "Dr. Yes" by those who know him best, speaks of facing adversity, overcoming obstacles, leading by example, and attaining success. With his positive attitude and tenacious work ethic, Dr. Lambert has emerged as not only a local celebrity and guru on leadership and growth, but is also recognized nationally. His most recent book, How to Grow from No, inspires readers from all backgrounds and helps them to continue pursuing their personal and professional goals.

October 12 - Free Design Tools to Help Market Your Small Business
Marketing on a shoestring? Want to punch up your flyers and social media posts? Instead of using the same old Microsoft Word templates or Instagram layouts, try something new! Librarians Dorrie Scott and Jane Stimpson introduce a variety of free online tools like Canva and Piktochart to create dynamic marketing content. This session takes place in a computer lab so you can gain hands-on practice. Meet in library computer lab 105.

Dorrie Scott (BBA–Marketing, MLS) worked for 17 years at Barnes & Noble, honing her operations, merchandising, and management skills. Now she has found her calling as a librarian at LSC-CyFair. She currently teaches computer workshops on Microsoft Office programs, designs and coordinates the library displays, and is the resident expert on eBooks, eReaders, and the world of digital downloads. She has a passion for web design, emerging technologies, the future of Web 3.0, and the uses of augmented reality applications in life and education. She recently kick-started the eTools Workshops, highlighting software, websites, and mobile apps for work, home,  and play. 

Jane Stimpson photoJane Stimpson has been a community college librarian in Houston for nearly six years. She was born and raised on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, but loves living in Texas. Her professional interests include instruction and outreach, and in her spare time she enjoys reading, yoga and Pilates, and baking.

Mark Carruba is the Chief Marketing Officer, Summit Dental Centers in Houston. Mark received his M.B.A. from William & Mary – Mason School of Business in 2002 and is a former senior partner with an advertising agency in Houston. In his current role with Summit Dental his primary focus is increasing sales of units through direct community involvement and building a positive community perception of the practice.

Learn how to value a business and determine if the franchise route is in your best interest from SBDC consultant and franchise owner Karen Sharp (Proforma), David and Anne Glover (The Joint Chiropractic), Chris Martin (Sport Clips) and franchise attorney Gail Shubot.

Karen Sharp has advised area businesses for the Small Business Development Center at Lone Star College for 5 years. With an MBA from the University of Houston, a bachelor's degree from Miami University of Ohio in Systems Analysis, and a broad background in corporate America, she launched her marketing, print, and promotions business in 1997. Prior to owning her business, Karen spent 12 years in IT as a systems analyst, project manager, consultant, sales engineer and sales representative at companies including Shell Oil, Tenneco Oil, and BMC Software.

David Glover photoDavid Glover graduated with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA degree in Accounting, and later earned his CPA. He has a rich history of not only running successful businesses (accounting, real estate, etc.), but also acquiring and selling profitable franchises. Presently he is the regional developer for the franchise, The Joint . . . the Chiropractic Place. Additionally, David is a licensed private pilot, a licensed Texas Real Estate Broker, a member of Lakeside Country Club and the Bayou City Breakfast Club. He has served as an Advisory Board member with Southwest Bank of Texas (now known as Amegy Bank) and on the Board of the Houston Apartment Association. His hobbies include golf, skiing, hunting and working at his small ranch.

Anne Glover photoAnne Glover graduated with Honors from the University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Finance where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega.  After earning her MBA, Anne worked for Texas Commerce Bank in commercial lending. In 1993, Anne founded Glover Fine Properties, Inc. to buy, renovate and sell residential properties. She has been a licensed real estate sales agent in the State of Texas since 1991. Not only has Anne succeeded in her real estate career, but has acquired, developed, and sold profitable franchises. Presently she is the regional developer for the franchise, The Joint . . . the Chiropractic Place.

Chris Martin photoChris Martin is a multi-unit owner of Sport Clips franchises in the Houston area.  Sport Clips provides hair care services for men and boys with over 1600 locations in the US and Canada. He has won several national awards including Highest Client Growth, Highest Sales Growth, Top New Store Client Growth & Store Owner of Year Runner Up. Chris balances his entrepreneur success with over 15 years experience in corporate positions responsible for law firm budgeting and planning software sales. Chris' community service includes currently serving as Board President for Christian Community Service Center. CCSC is a coalition of 41 churches including 2,000 volunteers serving the inner city Houston community.

Gail Shubot photoGail Schubot is a business law attorney. Her law practice, The Schubot Law Firm, offers counsel and assistance in the areas of franchise, licensing and distribution law. Clients include franchisors, franchisees and regional developers for a variety of industries and franchise concepts. The Schubot Law Firm also represents non-franchised commercial and nonprofit organizations in general business operations including the buying and selling of companies. Her firm assists its clients in matters of transactional and regulatory law as well as dispute resolution.

November 2 - How to do Business with Big Houston Companies
Jon Nordby gives insights into opportunities in Houston for doing business with major companies.
