- February 17, 2017Jessica Tovias named as the 24th annual Chancellor’s Essay Winner for Lone Star College-North Harris
HOUSTON (February 17, 2017) – Jessica Tovias has been selected as the Lone Star College-North Harris winner of the Lone Star College Foundation’s 24th Annual Student Essay Challenge. Tovias was one of six Lone Star College students selected for the award and a $1,000 scholarship. She presented her essay to approximately 250 education supporters at the annual Lone Star College Foundation Chancellor’s Breakfast on Jan. 31.

Author, former journalist and Lone Star College-Greenspoint Center English professor Mignette Dorsey will discuss her book “Speak Truth to Power: The Story of Charles Patrick, A Civil Rights Pioneer,” which focuses on her father, Civil Rights pioneer Charles Patrick and how he tackled corrupt police powers in the deep south in 1954. Dorsey’s speaking engagements are part of the college’s Black History Month calendar of events.

Dr. Seth Batiste will share his life experiences and his personal stories of hardship and grit with a special presentation, “My Higher Education Journey: From Fifth Ward Kid to Ph.D.” at Lone Star College-North Harris as part of the college’s celebration of Black History Month, Thursday, Feb. 2 at noon in the college’s Academic Building, room 126.

Each February, Lone Star College-North Harris recognizes Black History Month by hosting various cultural and educational events that highlight the important achievements of African-Americans in U.S. history. These events are free and open for the community to attend.

Stop by Lone Star College-North Harris' express registration event on Tuesday, January 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walmart Neighborhood Market, located at 24809 Aldine Westfield Rd. in Spring. College representatives will be on site to assist with applications, financial aid, and questions regarding certificate and degree plans.

Thorne Drive Houston, TX 77073 and on Jan. 19 at the LSC-Victory Center (Room 101), from 1 to 3 p.m., located at 4141 Victory Drive, Houston, TX 77088.
